Project Overview

Project Overview

Adoptify is an innovative mobile application designed to facilitate the adoption of stray animals, particularly dogs and cats, in urban areas such as Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) and Malang. Developed by a team of university students from various institutions across Indonesia, the app aims to reduce the number of stray animals while raising public awareness about the importance of responsible pet care and animal welfare.

Key Features & Functional Highlights

Key Features & Functional Highlights

Adoptify offers two core features that form the foundation of its user experience. The first is Adoption Matching, which connects potential adopters with verified foster caregivers or shelters. This feature is designed to build mutual trust by allowing users to view detailed profiles, communicate directly with the foster, and ensure compatibility before the adoption takes place.

The second key feature is Virtual Pet Wellbeing, which supports adopters post-adoption by providing smart reminders for feeding schedules, vaccination appointments, and overall pet health tracking. This not only empowers users to become more responsible pet owners but also extends Adoptify’s value beyond the initial adoption process—ensuring the long-term well-being of the animals.

To gain a deeper understanding of user needs, expectations, and pain points regarding pet adoption experiences, I conducted both quantitative and qualitative research. This mixed-method approach helped uncover valuable insights that informed the direction of Adoptify’s design.

To gain a deeper understanding of user needs, expectations, and pain points regarding pet adoption experiences, I conducted both quantitative and qualitative research. This mixed-method approach helped uncover valuable insights that informed the direction of Adoptify’s design.

The quantitative side was conducted through a digital survey distributed via social media platforms, which gathered responses from over 50 participants—mostly within the age range of 20–35 years old. The survey aimed to identify general behaviors, preferences, and frustrations related to pet adoption.

To complement this, I carried out in-depth interviews with five prospective adopters, all within the same age group, to better understand their emotions, motivations, and expectations when seeking to adopt a pet.

These conversations revealed not just what users wanted, but also why they felt uncertain or hesitant throughout the current adoption process.

What We Learned from Users

What We Learned from Users

From the research conducted, several key insights emerged that helped shape Adoptify’s core features. Around 80% of users expressed the need to understand a pet’s character before proceeding with adoption—such as whether the animal is kid-friendly, energetic, or comfortable around other pets.

Meanwhile, 60% found that existing local pet adoption platforms were confusing and lacked intuitive navigation. Additionally, two shelter managers shared that they often struggle to manage adoption data and communication manually. These findings emphasize the importance of a user-friendly interface, detailed and transparent pet profiles, and administrative tools to support shelter operations more efficiently.

Designing with Purpose

Designing with Purpose

Using these insights as our foundation, I began the interface development process by creating:

  • Low-Fidelity Wireframes: Focused on defining navigation structure and key screens.

  • High-Fidelity Prototypes: Built using soft, empathetic colors and intuitive UI components to reflect a sense of trust and care.

I paid close attention to feedback loops, especially around features like pet character tags, clear adoption forms, and pet profile visuals. These were iteratively tested and refined based on usability testing outcomes.

From Insights to Interface: Transforming User Feedback into Tangible Design Solutions

After conducting an extensive research process involving both surveys and interviews, my team and I gathered valuable insights regarding user needs, pain points, and expectations for a digital pet adoption experience. We collected feedback from 138 respondents through Google Forms, followed by 5 in-depth interviews with prospective adopters aged 20–35 years old.

Two standout insights emerged from the data:

  • 87.7% of respondents believe that an accessible pet adoption application is essential, indicating a clear need for a digital solution that connects shelters and adopters effectively.

  • On a scale of 1 to 10, 62% of users rated the usefulness of the Virtual Pet Wellbeings feature at 9 or 10, appreciating features like care reminders for feeding, vaccinations, and health tracking.

These findings affirmed that users were not only enthusiastic about the idea but also valued specific features that supported long-term pet care. Furthermore, shelter partners expressed the need for a more efficient system to manage adoption data, moving away from error-prone manual processes.
